General Requirements

Louisiana Major Lines Licensed Insurance Agents are required to complete 24 credits of continuing education every 2 years prior to their license expiration date. Of the 24 Credits required, 3 credits must be done in the category of Ethics Training. The remaining requirements are “license type specific”: Agents must take courses in the line of authority in which they are licensed and the courses are approved by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

Major Lines licenses include:

  • Life, Accident and Sickness
  • Property and Casualty
  • Personal Lines

Agents licensed in multiple lines are only required to meet the same requirements as agents with single lines of licensing.

Agents licensed in multiple major lines (Property and Life, for example) are only required to meet the same requirements as Producers with single lines of licensing. In other words: the maximum number of credits you need to earn is 24 – regardless of how many license lines of authority you hold.

Licenses are eligible for renewal when:

  1. all CE Requirements have been completed
  2. when the licensee is within 60 days of their license expiration date

Licenses can be renewed online through NIPR.com, or the Louisiana Industry Access Portal. The renewal fee is $50 for a single line of authority license and $55 for a combination license with two or more lines of authority.

Please note that renewal applications are not made available until all CE requirements have been completed and the agent’s profile is updated to reflect such. We strongly encourage agents to complete their CE requirements at least 2 days in advance of their license expiration date so that their renewal application is available in time to renew their license.

Special Training Requirements

There are special training requirements for Louisiana insurance agents who sell certain products. These courses count towards your CE Requirements.

Annuity Training

Any Louisiana life insurance agent who sells, solicits or negotiates an annuity product must complete a one-time, 4 Hour Annuity Suitability course prior to selling.

Flood Insurance

Producers with the lines of property, casualty, or personal lines must complete a 3 hour Flood Training Course as a part of their 24 credit hour requirement.

CE Exemptions and Reductions

Age and Experience Exemption

Louisiana insurance agents are eligible for an exemption from CE requirements if they are: age 65 or older and have a minimum of 15 years of experience and is either no longer engaged in the business of insurance, or is engaged in the business and is appointed by at least one insurance company. This exemption must be requested by completing the 65A Exemption Form, and return the to the Department via email at: producerlicensing@ldi.la.gov.

This exemption is granted for life, but agents must still submit a renewal application each renewal period, and this exemption does not apply to adjusters or for exemptions from Long-Term Care training requirements.

Military Exemption

Active military members unable to meet renewal requirements due to service commitments can request a waiver for these requirements and any late fees. This request can be made up to 2 years beyond the lapse of the license and prior outstanding CE Requirements need not be completed. To request a waiver, submit a written explanation detailing why the continuing education requirements could not be met, along with copies of deployment or other orders verifying military service during the renewal period.

Requests should be sent to: producerlicensing@ldi.la.gov.

Medical Exemptions

A licensed producer or adjuster unable to meet continuing education requirements due to a medical condition or injury may request a waiver and license renewal. To do so, they must submit a written request explaining why they couldn’t meet the requirements, along with a statement from a medical doctor confirming their inability to attend continuing education programs or complete self-study courses. This information can be submitted up to two years after the license has lapsed to request reinstatement without fulfilling the continuing education requirements or paying penalties or late fees.

Requests should be sent to: producerlicensing@ldi.la.gov.
