Alabama Insurance Agent Continuing Education and License Renewal Requirements
General Requirements
Alabama Licensed Insurance Agents are required to complete 24 Credit Hours of Continuing Education every 2 years to be eligible to Renew their License. Of the 24 credits, 3 credits must be in the area of Ethics Training. Licensees must complete their CE and Renewal Requirements prior to their Expiration Date, which is on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.
These rules apply to Major Lines licensed Agents. Major Lines include:
- Life
- Health
- Property
- Casualty
- Personal Lines
- Variable Annuity
- Variable Life
Major Lines does not include:
- Credit Agents
- Crop
- Portable Electronics
- Other Limited Lines Licenses
Producers licensed in multiple lines (Property and Life, for example) are only required to meet the same requirements as Producers with single lines of licensing. In other words: you only have to take 24 credit hours of CE if you hold multiple lines of licensing.
Alabama CE Requirements are “Non-License Type Specific”. Courses can be taken in any subject matter as long as:
- The Courses are approved by the Alabama Department of Insurance
- At least 3 of Credit Hours are approved for Ethics training
Exemptions
- Non-Resident Agents are exempt as long as they have met the CE and Renewal Requirements of their home State where they hold their License.
- Limited Lines Producers: Credit Insurance, Rental Vehicle Insurance, Crop, Portable Electronic, Travel, Motor Club, Dental Services, and Legal Services.
- Newly licensed producers, service representatives, adjusters or title insurance agents licensed within 12 months of the renewal date.
