All of our Utah Insurance Continuing Education courses are delivered in electronic format and can be viewed and completed on any mobile device. This includes chapter quizzes and final exams which are scored immediately upon completion. Each chapter is followed by a short chapter quiz which must be passed with a score of 70% or better in order to proceed to the next chapter. Upon completion of all chapter quizzes, you will be presented with the Final Exam which requires a passing grade of 70%. All quizzes and the Final Exam can be taken as many times as necessary until you pass. You have up to one year from the course purchase date to complete your courses.

Upon successful passage of each Final Exam your credit hours earned will be reported directly to your State regulator. The date and time of completion of your course is based on the specific time zone in which you completed the course.

Successfully completing a course will earn you a Certificate of Completion. Certificates of completion are immediately available on the My Courses page. Simply locate the completed final exam and click on the certificate icon found near the right side of the page. Please check all the information displayed on your certificate for accuracy. Inaccuracies on your certificate could represent inaccuracies in your BetterCE profile which could lead to reporting delays. If you feel your certificate is inaccurate in any way, please contact the BetterCE support team at support@betterce.info or call us at 1-888-501-7330.

General Requirements

Utah Major Lines Licensed Insurance Agents are required to complete 24 credits of continuing education every 2 years prior to their license expiration date. Of the 24 Credits required, 3 credits must be done in the category of Ethics Training). The remaining requirements are “non-license type specific”: Agents can take courses in any topic as long as they are approved by the Utah Department of Insurance.

At least 12 credit hours must be completed in the classroom or a classroom equivalent type course, and no more than 12 credit hours may be from courses provided by an insurer.

Major Lines include: Life, Accident and Sickness, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines. Producers licensed in multiple major lines (Property and Life, for example) are only required to meet the same requirements as Producers with single lines of licensing. In other words: you only have to take 24 credit hours of CE if you hold multiple lines of licensing.

Licenses are eligible for renewal when:

  • all CE Requirements have been completed, and
  • when the licensee is within 90 days of their license expiration date.

Special Training Requirements

There are special training requirements for Utah insurance agents who sell certain products. These courses count towards your CE Requirements.

Long Term Care

Utah insurance agents may not sell, solicit or negotiate a Long-Term Care policy unless the individual has completed an initial 8 Hour Long Term Care training course. Agents must also complete ongoing training consisting of a 4 Hour Long Term Care training course every compliance period following.

Annuity Training

Any Utah life insurance agent who sells, solicits or negotiates an annuity product must complete a one-time, 4 Hour Annuity Suitability course prior to selling.

Flood Insurance

Utah insurance agents who sell Flood Insurance must complete a 1 –time, 3 hour Flood Training Course.

CE Exemptions and Reductions

There are limited exemptions from CE Requirements for some Utah insurance agents.

Non-Resident Agents are exempt as long as they have met the CE and Renewal Requirements of their home State where they hold their License.

A licensee whose license lapses due to military service, voluntary service for a period of time designated by the person for whom the licensee provides voluntary service, or some other extenuating circumstance, such as long-term medical disability, may be exempt from the continuing education requirements in order to reinstate the license.

Licensees who were first licensed before December 31, 1982,may also be exempt from continuing education requirements.

Producers holding and maintaining the following designations are deemed to have met the CE requirements: CLU, ChFC and RHU with completion of the PACE program; CPCU with completion of the CPD program; and CFP, REBC, CIC, ACSR, CRM, SOFE, or IRES with completion of their continuing education requirements.

To apply for an exemption, attach a current proof of good standing letter for your designation when paying the renewal fee. Then contact Michael Covington atmcovington@utah.govto inform her of your attached letter.
