What Are My Iowa Insurance License Renewal Requirements?

The Iowa Insurance Division requires all major lines licensed agents to complete 36 credit hours of state-approved continuing education every three years. Major lines are agents licensed to sell: Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, Variable Life and Variable Annuities, and Personal Lines. Of the 36 credits, at least 3 must be approved for ethics.

Remember that no matter how many licenses you hold, you only need to do a maximum of 36 credits. So, for example, if you are licensed in Life as well as Property, you only need to do 36 credits total, 3 of which must be in ethics. 

Special training requirements exist for agents selling long-term care, annuity, and flood insurance. 

  • Agents who sell long-term care policies must complete an initial 8-hour training course. After that, you must complete a 4-hour long-term care training course for every renewal period. 
  • Producers who sell, solicit, or negotiate an annuity product must complete a one-time 4-hour annuity suitability course prior to selling. 
  • Producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3-hour continuing education course related to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) prior to selling.

Besides the ethics course, you can take courses in any subject matter as long as they are approved by the insurance division.

Step #2: Submit Your Iowa Insurance License Renewal Application Prior to Expiration

After completing your CE requirements, the last step you need to take is to renew your Iowa insurance license. This must be done prior to your license expiration date but not more than 90 days in advance of the expiration date. You can access your renewal application and file it online at NIPR Iowa License Renewal or Sircon Iowa Agent Renewal. The renewal fee is $50. 

If you don’t renew your Iowa insurance license prior to your expiration date, it will be considered expired, and you are prohibited from transacting insurance business. You still have up to 12 months to reinstate your license, but only if you completed your CE requirements before your license expiration date, and you must pay a reinstatement fee of $100 in addition to the $50 renewal fee.  

If you did not complete your CE requirements on time,  you’ll need to contact the Iowa Insurance Division for information on the process for reinstatement. In almost every case, the Iowa Department will allow you to reinstate your license by completing any outstanding CE due and then submitting the reinstatement application and late fees. If you fail to reinstate your license within 12 months beyond your original license expiration date, your license will be terminated, and you will have to undergo the relicensing process.

Connecticut will waive the CE requirements for those serving in the U.S. military on active duty outside the state during a substantial part of the compliance period.

Ohio Insurance License Expiration, Late Renewal, and Reinstatement

The Ohio Department of Insurance sends license renewal notifications via email. They are sent to the email address on file approximately 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to a license expiration date. The insurance license expiration date is every two years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.

Your insurance license in Ohio is eligible for renewal 90 days before the license expiration date, but only if you have completed all your continuing education requirements.

Ohio Insurance License Renewal Late Fees and Penalties

So, what happens if you don’t renew your license prior to your license expiration date? Fortunately, the Ohio Department of insurance does grant agents an additional 30 days to complete any outstanding CE and submit an application for late renewal, but there is a fee of $50 to do so.  After 30 days, the agent’s license is suspended and they are prohibited from transacting any insurance business. Agents still have up to one year from their original license renewal/expiration date to reinstate their license, but they must complete any outstanding CE due, and pay a reinstatement fee of $100. Beyond 1 year, the license is canceled, and the agent must re-license (take the pre-licensing course and exam) to be eligible to transact insurance. 

Just recall what was required to get licensed in the first place. You had to take a pre-licensing course that required 20-40 hours of your time. You had to study for the exam for many more hours, and then sit for and hopefully pass the exam. Aside from the time commitment, consider the fees that have to be paid for each of these steps, and the costs run into the many hundreds of dollars! It seems pretty obvious that a wiser course would be to renew your license on time and keep it active. Even if you aren’t currently working in insurance, it’s well worth your time and money to keep your license active.

BULLETIN: New Anti-Fraud Training Requirement for California Insurance Agents and Brokers

Please be advised that effective March 1, 2023 all California agents and brokers must complete a 1-hour Anti-Fraud Awareness Training Course as part of their ethics training requirement. This applies to all agents and brokers who renew, or late renew their license after March 1, 2023. It is important to point out that agents who have an expiration date occurring after March 1, 2023, and have already renewed their license, must still complete this training if they have not done so.

To comply with the new Agents and Brokers Anti-Fraud Training Requirements, agents must view a 1-hour Agents and Brokers Anti-Fraud Awareness Training Video developed by the California Department of Insurance. Agents must then complete and submit an Affidavit/Certificate of Completion and submit it via-email to the California Department of Insurance. Instructions are located on the Affidavit/Certificate of Completion form.

This course is currently being offered for free by the California Department of Insurance. What Are My Maryland Insurance License Requirements?

This article covers all the steps you’ll need to follow to keep your insurance license active in Maryland. We’re confident that the BetterCE straightforward two-step process can help you renew your license quickly and without fuss.

Every two years, you need to renew your insurance license. This must be done within 15 days prior to the license expiration date, which is the last day of your birth month. 

There are only two steps required to keep your Maryland insurance license active:

  1. Complete the required continuing education.
  2. Submit your renewal application at least 15 days prior to expiration.

Step #1: Complete the Required Continuing Education

The Maryland Insurance Administration requires that all major lines licensed agents complete 24 credit hours of state-approved continuing education every two years. Major lines are those agents who are licensed to sell: Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Variable Annuity and Variable Life, and Personal Lines. Of the 24 credits required, at least 3 credits must be approved for ethics.

Remember that no matter how many licenses you hold, you only need to do a maximum of 24 credits total. For example, if you are licensed in Life, Health, and Property, you only need to do 24 credits total, 3 of which need to be in ethics. 

Special training requirements exist for agents selling long-term care or flood insurance. 

  • Agents who sell long-term care policies must complete a 2-hour long-term care training every renewal period. 
  • Property and Casualty Agents who sell flood insurance must complete a 2-hour continuing education course related to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) every renewal period.

Other than the ethics course and any special training requirements, you can take courses in any subject matter as long as they are approved by the Maryland insurance department. 

There are two exemptions from CE requirements. Producers over the age of 70 as of April 30, 2013, are exempt from CE requirements. Also, if a resident licensee has been consecutively licensed for 25 or more years prior to October 1, 2008, their CE requirement is 8 hours.

Step #2: Submit Your Renewal Application Prior to Expiration

After completing your CE requirements, the last step you need to take is to renew your Maryland insurance license. This must be done 15 days prior to your license expiration date but not more than 90 days in advance of the expiration date.

You can access your renewal application and file it online at NIPR Maryland License Renewal or Sircon License Renewal. There is also a Paper Renewal Application.

What Are the Late Fees and Penalties if I Don’t Renew My Pennsylvania Insurance License on Time?

To renew your Pennsylvania insurance license, you must complete your continuing education requirements every two years before your license expiration date. In short, if you don’t complete your continuing education and renew your insurance license on time, you’ll be subject to additional fees and timelines if you wish to keep it active. This article provides further insight into late fees, penalties, and how to reinstate your Pennsylvania insurance license.

So What if I Don’t Renew My Pennsylvania Insurance License On Time? 

Let’s recall that Pennsylvania insurance agents must complete their CE requirements every two years to be eligible to renew their license. Once the CE is completed, they must submit their renewal application and pay a renewal fee of $55. This must be done prior to the agent’s license expiration/renewal date, which occurs on the last day of the agent’s birth month—every two years.  

If an agent fails to meet the renewal requirements prior to their license expiration/renewal date, they have up to 60 days to keep their license active by performing a “late renewal.” To do so they must complete any outstanding CE requirements, submit a late renewal application, and pay the late renewal fee of $165. 

Agents who miss the 60-day late renewal period will be considered inactive and are prohibited from transacting insurance business. However, they still have up to one year from their original expiration/renewal date to reinstate their license. To have a license reinstated, agents must complete any outstanding CE and submit and pay the late renewal/reinstatement fee of $165. Again, this must be done within one year of the missed expiration/renewal date. After one year, the license will be terminated, and the agent must relicense if they wish to transact insurance.

Renewal Late Fees and Penalties

The standard renewal fee for Pennsylvania insurance licenses is $55. The late renewal fee is $165, and the reinstatement fee is also $165. The costs begin to mount the later you attempt a renewal or reinstatement.

What Are My Michigan Insurance License Renewal Requirements?

This article covers all the steps you’ll need to follow for your insurance license renewal in Michigan.  We’re confident that the BetterCE straightforward process can help you renew your license quickly and without fuss.

Every two years, you need to complete 24 credit hours of Approved Continuing Education prior to the Continuing Education Renewal Date or “CERD”. Your CERD occurs on the first day of your birth month – every 2 years. Of the 24 credits required, at least three of the 24 credit hours must be in the category of ethics. Your remaining credits can be taken in any subject matter as long as the courses are approved by the Michigan Department of Financial Services. 

It’s important to note that there are no “renewal requirements” for Michigan insurance agents.   There is no renewal application or renewal fees. All agents need to do is complete their required CE prior to their CERD. The license will remain active for another two years if the CE requirements are completed on time.

Special training requirements exist for agents selling long-term care, annuity, or flood insurance. 

  •  Agents licensed for Accident and Health or Life who sell long-term care policies must complete an initial 8-hour long-term care course prior to selling and then a 4-hour long-term care training every renewal period following.
  • Any producer who sells Annuity products must complete a one-time 4-hour annuity suitability training prior to selling.
  • Property Line of Authority Agents who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3-hour continuing education course related to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) prior to selling.

Other than the ethics course and any special training requirements, you can take courses in any subject matter as long as they are approved by the Michigan insurance department. 

Michigan License Renewal Exemptions

Licensed agents who are currently on active military duty or deployments may be granted a waiver from continuing education requirements. A CE requirement waiver may also be requested due to illness of self or spouse that requires an inordinate amount of time for care. Failure to Complete Michigan License Renewal Requirements

If you fail to complete the continuing education requirements, your license will be suspended for CE noncompliance. The suspension will last for 90 days or until your continuing education requirement is met. During this time you can service your existing book of business but not transact any new insurance business. If your CE is not completed within 90 days from your CERD, your license will be terminated and you will not be able to transact any insurance business. Plus, all carriers for which you’re appointed will be notified that you are suspended. 

Beyond 90 days you still have up to 12 months from your missed CERD to reinstate your license, but you must submit a license application and pay a fee of $10. Now is the Time to Start Your Continuing Education for Michigan License Renewal
